Friday Fable #6

Friday Fable – Setting the Record Straight

Welcome to the next Friday Fable, where Avon United USUALLY clears up misinformation designed to mislead voters. However, today is time for a change.

We’re sick of the negativity taking place in this campaign. So, we are going to delve into some positiveness that we can share with residents to show why we are running for office.

(Truth: we are spending so much time fending off baseless, negative attacks that we lost focus on the positives we bring to the table.)

Today’s Discussion: “What positive ideas do you have to further enhance Avon Township?”

The Truth: There are numerous ideas that have already been discussed - from enhancing job skills in area residents, to the creation and funding of the township food pantry, to working with partners to enhance life for township residents – but here is a sneak peek at an idea that is being flipped around right now:

• Avon Township once operated a senior bus service specifically designed to transport senior citizens unable to drive.

• That senior bus was retired years ago due to logistic reasons.

• No one can deny the need for a township senor bus as some seniors need transportation but are unable to drive.

• Avon Township does provide PACE bus and Dial-A-Ride information to those who need it, but operating our own township bus would make it easier for seniors in need.

• Rideshare is always a viable alternative, but things like Uber and Lyft are too expensive for seniors living on a fixed income.

• This is a situation Avon United has been trying to fix.

• To push the idea forward, Supervisor Michele Bauman has begun building a “business coalition” among township businesses to assist with the creation of this very important issue.

• The purpose of the coalition would be to bring together business owners, individuals and organizations (stakeholders) to find ways to improve the overall health and well-being of residents.

• This coalition would exchange knowledge, ideas, and needs for the community and assist in making sustainable changes.

• The township could utilize the talent from this community to help with the senior bus idea.

• Additional details will be worked out after the election by the coalition and stakeholders involved.

Bottom Line – Filmmaker David Lynch once said, “Negativity is the enemy of creativity.” When you spend your days negatively focusing on your campaign opponents, you lose sight that the reason you chose to run for office is to help people. We aren’t forgetting that.

The first question voters should ask is “what would you do on the first day should you be elected to office?” Our plan is to continue to ensure our residents are cared for while also carrying out the business of the township. Part of the way to care for people is to keep the township food pantry stocked, make sure people have the skills necessary to get jobs and make sure seniors are able to get where they need to go. It’s simple to sling mud at your opponent - especially during campaign season – but that’s never been the mark of real leadership. Instead, the leaders of Avon United look to inspire.

Have questions? Drop them below, and we’ll answer. See you next Friday!

I received a mailing from you that mentions transparency, yet I don’t see anything on the mailing or your website about party affiliation. Can you comment on which party you align most closely with? I realize that you likely believe both parties have strengths and weaknesses, but it’s also clear that there are some very different views of what needs to happen going forward, so it’s an important distinction. Please clarify.
