Friday Fable – Setting the Record Straight
Welcome to Friday Fable, a new feature at Avon United where - in the name of transparency - we clear up misinformation designed to mislead voters.
Today’s Fable: “The Avon Township board raised taxes and gave themselves a pay raise.”
The Truth: Taxes
- Avon Township receives about 1% of your property tax bill (e.g., $103 in 2024 vs. $100 in 2023 on a $10K bill).
- The legal tax levy cap in Illinois is 5%—Avon Township kept it under 4%.
- The 2024 proposed tax levy increased slightly from $1.905M to $1.973M.
- That tax levy increase was about $3 per homeowner across 25,500 properties.
Raises
- Avon Township officials are currently some of the lowest paid in the county.
- The "raises" were approved in September 2024, but won’t take effect until May 2025, after the election.
- This “raise” is for the next elected board, not the current one.
- Raises will increase incrementally over 4 years through 2028.
- The full-time Supervisor salary will increase from $58,750 in 2025 to $66,124 in 2028 —still among the lowest in Lake County.
Bottom Line:
Yes, the taxes levy increased—but by only $3 per home. Yes, raises were approved—but they don’t affect the current board and are still the lowest in the county.
